Apartment List just released a first-of-its-kind study quantifying the impact of rental fraud on the market. An estimated 5.2 million renters have lost money in a scam across the U.S.

Here are some highlights from the study:

  • In Houston, 25% of renters have encountered fraud listings, and 4.7% have lost money due to rental fraud.
  • Nationwide, 17.6% of renters who lost money due to rental fraud lost over $2,000
  • Millennials, aged 18 to 29, are 42% more likely to have lost money in a rental scam

Of the 6.4 percent of renters who lost money due to a rental scam, the median loss is $400, but many renters lost a lot more.
